A LOVE LETTER TO ITS ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA.

This is usually a sports blog, if you normally read my stuff you’ll know that, and I like to take aim at personalities in the sports world and call them out for generally being wankers.

But I thought today I would do something different, admittedly is a direction I have wanted to go in for a while and do a bit more outside of sports, and today I thought fuck it, I’m just going to do it. Other than a review of Ted Lasso I have stuck solely to sports, and i rarely write about things I love, so here goes. And as ever if you don’t like it you can stick it up your arse!

My Sunny fandom started 6 or 7 years ago, yeah i get it, I’m not one of the ones who were there from the start, whatever, shut up bird. A friend told me I had to watch it but wouldn’t tell me why, he wouldn’t give me any inclination of why I should watch it but was adamant that I needed to.

Like many I’m sure, it went onto my list on Netflix, as do so many things that I think I’ll get to eventually but inevitably it stays there for what seems to be an eternity.

One day though, I said bollocks to it, I hadn’t looked through episodes, I didn’t read anything about the show, no reviews, no nothing. I just put it on and watched it unhindered by others opinions.

“The Gang Gets Racist” episode one, straight off the bat. Jesus wept that’s a bit of me I thought, I like my comedy dark, and this was going to be good. The title alone had me intrigued and to be honest I was hooked before the theme music came on.

An early glimpse into the ego of Dennis

Now don’t get me wrong, I like series one, I think its important in the set up of the show, but watching it back, I wonder what happened to Mac’s gay cousin, not country Mac but the one we see in the bar in the first episode. Listening to the Its Always Sunny Podcast it seems like they wrote in a few characters and then totally forgot about them, like Charlie and his twin sisters! That being said to me its the weakest of the 14 series we’ve had in full thus far, good, it stands up but from series two onwards Sunny hits the stratosphere.

There are some good solid laughs in series one, and like most comedies you have to get through it to get to the good stuff. And I think if you’re reading this you will be in agreement with me.

So I’d watched the first episodes, even the most cynical of Sunny fans will admit that when Frank shows up is where the good shit starts to go down,

I’m not going to bore you all with a long article about each series and blah blah blah, but I wanted to express how Sunny makes me feel, and although it sounds very odd, has had a profound impact on my life.

What I love is the fact that every single person in the entire show, lead characters, side characters the whole lot, they are all just fucking horrible people. I genuinely cant think of anybody who is a reoccurring character that’s got an ounce of actual decency in them. And that is what I love. Frank comes in and allows these fucking cretins to do whatever they want is for me the best evolution possible.

You can’t not help but like the cast, no matter how horrible they are, you genuinely want them to be happy, probably none more so than Charlie, the lovable dummy, who can sometimes be just as cruel as the others, the episode with the Taft’s standing out. I just want Charlie to be happy with the waitress, be able to hang out under the bridge with Duncan and bash rats, that’s not too much to ask for surely.

Like many of you I watch the show from start to finish and then just start over again, repeatedly, I stick it on in the background when I’m cooking. I put it on to watch at night, and in the past I have used it as a sleeping aid, though now I don’t because I found myself watching the episodes instead of sleeping.

When I’m watching sport I’ll call somebody a jabroni, followed closely by cunt or something else. Or if somebody wants to tell me something personal or needs a shoulder to cry on I have to stop myself from offering them an egg at this trying time and giving people ocular pat downs when they walk past me in the street.

I’m not entirely sure what I’ll do when we are told there won’t be any new episodes. I don’t think I will ever stop watching the episodes. In the same way I will watch an Only Fools And Horses episode when its on, I’m not sure I could binge them like I do Sunny though. I go through phases with things like Trailer Park Boys, where I watch them over and over for a few months then get sick of them, that’s never happened with Sunny.

Horrible as they are, and despite the fact Dennis is a total psychopath (one of my favourite things about the show is series by series him becoming a complete monster) when I have Sunny on its like I’m in good company, with my friends sitting around me, sad and pathetic as that sounds. I love the McPoyles, they’re are just fucking brilliant. I love how fucking metal they are, the whole scene in The Gang Gets Held Hostage is pure comedy genius “Ryan stab somebody” gets me every time, and when Liam pours the milk over the knife in his arm, fuck me, tears roll down my face each time I see it.

To finish, Sunny is quite simply in my eyes the best comedy series of all time, and will remain that way, I’m in my 30’s now, I don’t like new things, I don’t like change, I just want everything to remain exactly how it is right now. I’ll still be watching Dee being called a bird, laughing at Dennis manipulating Mac, Charlie bashing rats, and watching Frank and Artemis have make up sex in a dumpster behind Wendy’s from now until eternity.

Cheers, The Fat Man.
