There is no debate.

Since it was announced that Sergio Aguero is leaving Manchester City there has been a debate online about who the greatest Premier League striker I’m going to try and finish the debate once and for all.

I want everybody reading this to answer the only question that matters when you discuss strikers, what commodity do strikers deal in? Goals.

When you go down the list you’ll see some great players from Rooney to Henry to Drogba, but the one player that sits atop that list, Alan Shearer, therefore the that ends the debate.

Two hundred and sixty! 260 Premier League goals, for the sheet metal workers son from Newcastle, a more complete striker you couldn’t wish to find.

Two huge injury set backs meaning he lost a yard of pace, and probably cost him another few years playing in the top flight, but being 52 goals clear of Wayne Rooney, 79 in front of Aguero and exactly 100 in front of Harry Kane, the closest to Shearer’s throne. But at 28, and playing for Tottenham, is Kane going to get there and beat the record? I don’t think so, unless he moves on.

The disrespect Shearer gets when the debate about being the greatest Premier League striker comes around is staggering, he was incredible in the air, if he got through one on one you knew the net was going to bulge, not only a great goal scorer but a scorer of great goals. If it was out jumping a defender to power in a header or his predatory instinct in the penalty area, to hammering in a free kick from 30 yards, he could do it all, until his first knee injury his pace was frightening.

For him to be that far in front of the other great players on the scoring list is a staggering and often overlooked feat. Shearer deserves the respect that’s due for being the top of the list.

I also feel that a point lost on people is when you look at the list, 10 of the top 12 players are English, but you’d never hear anybody mention Les Ferdinand or Andy Cole as the greatest ever, Andy Cole has 83 more Premier League goals than Didier Drogba, I guess it’s largely forgotten by the people who judge footballers by their rating on FIFA.

So I don’t want to hear any more bollocks about who’s the greatest Premier League striker of all time, there’s one, Shearer, and you can’t disagree with facts, if Harry Kane scores more goals in his career than Shearer then he’ll be the greatest, but until then it’s Shearer, the Premier League has been littered with great strikers, but there can be only one number one, and his name is Alan Shearer, until somebody beats his record, because a strikers only commodity should be goals.

Cheers, the fat man.
